EOTC Week Te Papa Visit

Today we had a wonderful visit to Te Papa!
We discovered how earthquakes happen and visited the earthquake house. We had a Marae visit with Mrs Mills, who explained all about the exhibits. She even let us crawl into the sleeping house!
We looked at animal skeletons in the xray room and at the giant squid. After lunch we explored nature space and the dinosaur dig! It was an awesome day and the staff at Te Papa said all the Muritai School children were so well behaved! Well done everyone!

Mass-weighing objects at maths time.

This didn't work!
We are learning to weigh and compare the mass and the weight of objects at maths time.
First we tried some problem solving- making our own balance with a can and a piece of corflute!

This way did!
Clever girl Una!

Next we made different shaped cats with a measured amount of play dough. Everyone's ball of dough weighed the same but the cats all looked different! Would the scales balance when we weighed them?

 Yes they did!

Well done everyone!

Practicing for the Athletic Sports

The junior classes are practicing for our Athletic Sports next Wednesday. Today we  worked on shot put skills, using "jelly" balls as the real shot puts are too heavy!

Muritai School Carnival

On Sunday Muritai School held its School Carnival!
It was a lovely day and it was great to see so many of you there!
There were lots of stalls, rides and yummy food and drink.
The Carnival raises money for the school to spend on things we need.
Room1 shelves wrapped up as we were the present wrapping room!
Outside
 The toy Room!
Inside

There was a competition for Sand saucers and sand gardens.

Lightning ball

Room1 children all had a turn to touch a lightning  ball  this week.
Everyone wanted to know "How does it work"?
The glass ball contains a mixture of gases. When the current is turned on the base produces electromagnetic waves that turn the mixture of gases into lines of plasma that you can see.
The lines of plasma are called streamers and are attracted to your hand when you touch the glass.

Sometimes you can feel the streamers tickling your fingers!
We will write some stories about how that feels!
