Javier's Birthday
Yesterday Javier turned 6 years old and his mum and dad brought in a wonderful car cake for Room 1 to share. Javier's sister Marta came too, to help serve the slices of cake. We all loved it! Thank you Javier for sharing your birthday celebration with us!

Musical Stars
The junior school were lucky to have a trip into Wellington yesterday to see a show put on by the children from 'Musical Stars.'
It was called 'Take Care' and encouraged us to take care of the environment. Watching the children on stage was a great introduction rehearsing for our own production over the coming weeks. The dry ice was very exciting and everyone enjoyed it!

Junko's Visit
Today we were lucky to have Yoshiki's mum Junko visit us to help us learn to count in Japanese.
We counted using number cards and drew the numbers on the floor with our fingers!
We played a counting game called"Ikutsu", which is like Paper, Scissors, Rock.
Junko wore a beautiful kimono with an obi and special shoes.
We all thought she looked very beautiful!
We counted the number of times Junko could wrap the obi around some lucky children!
Junko showed us Japanese koi kites and Yoshiki showed us his wonderful writing and read a story he had written in Japanese characters. He practises every day.
You are very clever Yoshiki!
Thank you Junko and Yoshiki for sharing your culture with us!

Mr Bird - Olympic medal winner!
Today Mr Bird showed Room1 the Olympic bronze medal he won at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games.
He won the medal as the cox in his team of rowers. They came 3rd in the final of their race. He told us how everyone had to work together and train hard to do their best.
He felt proud to win a medal for New Zealand!
Room 1 were surprised at how big and heavy it was! Every one had a turn to wear it while they imagined what sport they would like to do well at!

Spanish Day at the Olympics
On Thursday Room 1 watched some Spanish athletes competing in the Olympic Games.
Javier's mum Beatriz made some yummy paella for us to eat and bought red and yellow balloons to match our Spanish flag.
We listened to some children's songs in Spanish on the data projector and joined in with the actions.
Javier knew all the words and we all think he is very clever!
