Carter Observatory Visit

Today all the Year 1 students visited the Carter Observatory in Wellington to learn about our Solar System.

We all took part in a workshop where we had a turn to hold a moon stick or a torch.

When we shone the torch on different parts of the moon stick we could see the different shapes of the moon that we can see in the sky.

After that we explored the galleries and tried out lots of space experiments.

Last of all we watched a planetarium show about Tycho the Space dog who got lost in the solar system and flew close to lots of planets on his way back to Earth. We lay back in the sloping seats and watched the show on the ceiling!

We all had a wonderful time and enjoyed learning new information about the Earth, the Sun,the Moon and other stars and planets in our Solar System!

What Room 1 know about the Sun

Room1 are learning about the solar system and how the Sun and the Moon interact with the Earth.
We have been writing some facts about the sun to publish with our fabulous sun paintings. We hope you like them!

Week 3 Junior Assembly

Congratulations to Roko, Emily, Johnny and Lulu, our latest Junior Assembly winners!
You are all hardworking, caring and responsible members of Room 1.
Well done!

Science Week Friday: The Big Bang!

Muritai school has enjoyed a super science week this week with teachers and students involved in science experiments and investigations every day! To celebrate the final day Mrs Ryan and Mr McMillan organised a Geyser Tube Challenge for the whole school.  Room 1 helped me get things ready.

Every class chose a student - (we chose Lulu) to pull the pin on a tube of mentos which then dropped into a bottle of coke.

The resulting acid/base reaction shot a geyser of bubbles as high as 15 metres into the air!
Well done Lulu, you were fantastic and so brave to have a go!

Congratulations to the winners - Year 5&6!

Science Week Thursday: Fizz Inflator!

On Thursday we mixed vinegar and baking soda to produce an acid/base reaction.
We filled a balloon with baking soda and emptied it into a bottle of vinegar. Everyone was amazed as the mixture fizzed and thousands of bubbles filled the bottle and the balloon grew bigger and bigger! The gas in the bubbles was carbon dioxide, which blew up the balloon.

Science Week Wednesday

Today we experimented with magnets in the magnetic sand!
Awesome!

At Junior Scientist's Club at lunchtime we attached metal paper clips to butterfly shapes in boxes and made hovering butterflies. We held a strong magnet over the top of the box and they attracted the metal  in the paperclips!

Science Week - Tuesday

Today our science experiment was the great candle experiment.
We lit a candle and put a jar over the top. We poured coloured water in the dish around the jar and when the candle went out the lowered air pressure in the jar sucked the coloured water into it. It was so exciting to watch! We talked about keeping safe with fire and that children must never touch matches!

Football!

Today all the Year 1 & 2 classes took turns to learn some football skills from football players from the Lower Hutt Football Club.
Our favourite was the Pirate Ship game! We learned how to dribble the ball correctly with our feet and are now much better at it!

Green Eggs and Ham

Today we enjoyed reading the story Green Eggs and Ham.  Then we made some green eggs as a science experiment to see if we could suck an egg yolk into a plastic bottle using air pressure! While the egg was in the bottle Emily squirted green food colour onto the egg white and Oliver stirred it up.
It worked but then the yolk broke when we tried to do it again!
Matty took some of these photos! Well done everyone! You are asking super scientific questions and showing clever thinking!
