Group of the week!

Congratulations to polite, cheerful, helpful and tidy red table group this week!

Tuesday Science: our leakproof bag!

This experiment seemed like magic!
We poked pencils and skewers through bags of water and the water did not empty out of the holes!

The science behind this happening is that the plastic bags contain a POLYMER which is a stretchiness that hugs the pencils so tightly while they are pushed through the bag that it makes a seal. When we pulled out the pencils the water DID pour out the holes as the seal was broken.

Tuesday means science!

FIZZING AND POPPING!

CHEMICAL REACTIONS!

This Tuesday in the STEM room we experimented with baking soda and vinegar by making some  volcanos. The brown malt vinegar made more foam (carbon dioxide) than the white vinegar!
We had a big discussion about how real volcanos are formed and how and why they erupt and we looked at some photos of real volcanoes on land and under the sea!

Arts Festival Trip

The juniors were off to Wellington today to see some Children's National Arts Festival shows.
First the bus took us to the Hannah Playhouse where we watched a shadow puppets show. Then  Zack's dad Kevin was chosen to be in the performance! He was very funny and we all clapped and clapped him!
We walked to Te Papa for lunch and then and watched an amazing performance of Whale Rider.
We were all very tired but happy when we got back to school at 3pm!

STEM Room Tuesday

Every Tuesday we go to the STEM Room to investigate a science experiment.
At present we are focussing on observation.
In this experiment we dropped a little bit of dishwash liquid on top of some drops of food colour in a tray of milk.  We watched as the colours swirled around the dish. We found out that  the dishwash liquid was trying to gobble up the fat particles in the milk and we could see the milk moving away as we had coloured it. It did not work with water because there are no fat particles in water!
