Observational Drawing.
Our Art focus this term has been observational drawing. Room 1 are learning to look carefully at the objects they are going to draw and then sketch what they can actually see. They keep checking with their eyes rather than try and remember in their heads. The sketches are then coloured with matching pastels.
We hope you like our observational drawings of Paddington Bear! Check out the beautifully sketched toggles on his blue duffle coat!

Butterfly Kites
This week we made our butterfly kites with our big buddies. We are currently exploring shape and symmetry in maths and it was great for everyone to have another pair of hands to help with the tricky folds!
We had wonderful time flying them outside but unfortunately there was no wind on Friday and the kites would not stay up in the air for long! We have hung them up to wait for the next windy day and will try again!

Travelling Ted's New Bag
When Travelling Ted went home with superstar Jack this week, Jack's mum made Ted a new bag to keep his special things in! His old plastic bag was getting very tatty, so all of Room 1 are very happy!
Here is Jack showing the new bag for news and checking it out for size with the next superstar Amelie!

Certificates week 5
Waiting for a Chrysalis!
On Friday George noticed that one of our caterpillars had curled into a 'J' shape!
Room 1 know that this means that it will change into a chrysalis, or pupa, very soon! We put the swan plant on the carpet in the middle of the mat area so we could keep an eye on it all the time while we were working because we did not want to miss seeing it happen! Unfortunately it was still in a 'J' when we went home so we will have to wait till Monday. Will it be a boy or a girl?
Looking after our Garden
Now we have our own garden plot Room 1 are learning how to look after it.
We planted our plants carefully by digging a hole big enough to hold all the soil around the roots.
Then we watered them carefully. Jack is our expert as he helps with gardening at home. He showed us how to give each plant the right amount so it does not get washed out of the ground! Then we all had a turn with the big hose reel!
Every day from now on the superstar and superstar helper will water our garden with the watering can.
The butterflies like our big pink Dahlia!

Maths: Statistics
Room 1 are working on statistical investigations at present. The students:
1. sort information into categories for display
2. make a graph of data collected
3. make statements about what they have found out
From working on this pictograph Room 1 found out that the same number of children have blue eyes as brown eyes. Less children have hazel eyes.

Swimming Festival
Today we held our junior School Swimming Festival at the Eastbourne Pool. The focus this year was on participation in fun events rather than being the winner. Favourite events were swimming with "noodles" and running down the pool blowing bubbles and pushing a ball with your nose! After our swim we had lunch at the park and a play in the playground.

Our Self Portraits
Room1 have been completing their self portraits using black pens, pastels, crayons and dye. They looked carefully at the size of different parts of their bodies and drew on the whole sheet of paper with their head at the top, feet at the bottom. We enlarged the drawings on the photocopier and they filled in the detail with crayon, pastel and dye.
We hope you like them as much as we do!
