Our First Butterfly!

We have 19 chrysalis on our giant swan plant and on Saturday the first one hatched into a monarch butterfly! After drying it's wings it flew straight onto the daisies in Room 3's garden! It is a male because he has a pair of black spots on his lower wings. He will drink nectar but not be looking for a swan plant to lay eggs on.

Week 3 Certificates

Well done to all our Room 1 certificate winners this week!
Blue table earned Group of the Week this week for moving around the classroom sensibly and practising good manners.
C.A.R.E. certificates winners were all great role models!

Our Butterfly Garden

Year 1 and 2 have been finding out which flowers attract butterflies so we can plant them in our new butterfly garden beds. Mrs Ryan and Mrs Heath took a child from each room to the garden centre to choose the plants for each class. We took a list with photos of the flowers we wanted to buy with us. We found out that butterflies can't see very well and like flowers with bright colours and lots of nectar which they drink. Back at school everyone planted their class plants and now we will watch for butterflies to come and drink nectar from them.

The Miracle!

At lunchtime on Thursday some students and teachers were lucky enough to spot a monarch caterpillar shedding its skin to reveal an emerging chrysalis! Mr Dobson managed to video it on his phone so we could all watch it back in the classroom. Here it is!

Looking for Butterflies.

Our year 1&2 inquiry this term is to find out how to attract monarch butterflies to our new garden plots in the playground outside the staffroom. We will then study plant and butterfly life cycles.
We went for a walk around the school to see if we could find some butterflies and to watch what they were doing.

Over the road in the year 7&8 senior school we found lots of white butterflies around the vegetables and one monarch by the flowers.
We think that butterflies like swan plants and also flowers to land on so we are going to watch to see which flowers the butterflies fly to most. Then we will plant the kinds they like in our new gardens.
Here we are investigating the plants and flowers in the senior school!

Week 2 Certificates

Group of the week this week were the children sitting at the Green table. They worked cooperatively, sharing and putting equipment away in the right place so they were always ready for the next learning activity. Great job Green table!

At Junior Assembly we award C.A.R.E. certificates:
C: Citizenship - being a positive member of our class
A: Achievement - producing quality work
R: Responsibility - listening carefully to the teacher's instructions
E: Effort - trying your best

Well done to this week's winners! Keep it up Room1

Year 1&2 Assembly

On Friday it was Room 1's turn to be the host class for Year 1 & 2 Assembly. Rosa and Marcus were our wonderful hosts! They spoke beautifully into the microphone even though it was the first time they had used one! Room 1 showed their caterpillar drawings and we won the assembly teddy bear award for the best class behaviour. Well done Room 1 ! I am very proud of you! Keep it up!

Swimming

We are enjoying swimming each day with the Kiwi Swim instructors.

Can you spot yourself in the pool?
Every one has been in the water and most of the class can float on their backs with the help of the pool noodles!

Well done Room1
