Abby's First Day

Abby enjoyed having her friends Harriet and Emma look after her on her first day at school today.
She loved joining in with jump jam, having news about her birthday, handwriting and making number flowers at maths time. After morning tea she pointed to the words in her reading book and practised a dance for the school production. She played with her friends at lunch time and made a frog as "f" is the letter of the week. Well done Abby, you have made a great start to school.

Mixed Media Artwork

We are learning to use different materials in our artwork.
We drew our gingerbread man outlines with chalk and then mixed brown and gold paint to get the shades of colour we wanted. We chose a wallpaper background and then we matched buttons to pick out the features.

Life Education Caravan Visits

We were very excited when the Life Education caravan arrived in the playground outside our clasroom! During our visits Harold the Giraffe and teacher Jo have been helping us all learn how food gives us energy, about the food pyramid, what a balanced diet looks like and the things our body needs to stay happy and healthy.

Linseed Popcorn!

The current question for investigation in Room 1's Food Changes unit is What kind of seeds make popcorn?
We chose linseeds to try first.
Student predictions were - They might not pop. They might explode. The popcorn maker will blow up.
We poured in the little black linseeds, turned the machine on and observed carefully.
It began to heat up and smell like popcorn! Then we heard a popping sound and linseed popcorn began to tumble out!!
We saw little yellow popped bits with the skin peeling off but lots was still black and shiny - Kaya's observation
It tasted like crunchy coffee - James

Next we will try sesame seeds!

Great Sportsmanship at the Junior School Duathlon!

Today everyone in the Junior School ran and rode their way to the finish line at the Duathlon! It was a long way to run and everyone had to pedal hard on the soft grass on the big field! Afterwards Room 1 used the red and yellow thinking hats to talk about and draw what they liked best about the Duathlon and how they felt at the end. Room 1 students were very proud of themselves for keeping on going even when it was hard work! Well done everyone! I am very proud of you all!
Thank you to all the parents who helped out with organisation and cheered the children on!

Emma's First Day.

Emma had an exciting start to her first day! After meeting up with her friends Mila and Alex, she ran and rode her bike in the Junior School Duathlon! She enjoyed sharing news about her singing Barbie, writing on the whiteboard, reading from her browsing box and with the teacher, eating lunch with her friends and playing on the slide at lunchtime. Well done Emma, you had a happy smile all day!

Preschool visitors.

Thursday is preschool visit day and today we had 7 visitors to Room 1. We are looking forward to them starting school! It was great to have morning tea together and make mouse masks as Mm is the letter of the week.

Gingerbread Men!

Today we visited our buddies in Room 11. We wanted to thank them for helping us make our gingerbread men so we took them some to share. It was the first time some of us had been up the stairs in the big classroom block!

PMP

Rooms 1 & 3 have been working together on the perceptual motor programme.
The activities involve using the muscles in our bodies in many different ways.
See how clever we are at twirling the ribbons this week!

Why do gingerbread men get bigger when they cook?

Puffy fat cooked gingerbread men!
Thin uncooked gingerbread men!

Kaya brought fresh eggs from his hens for the recipe.

This week our inquiry question about food changes is why do gingerbread men get bigger when they cook? To find out we baked gingerbread men with our Room 11 buddies and compared the sizes. The cooked gingerbread men were bigger and higher! Poppy thinks that the heat makes the mixed up ingredients puff up. Our next step is to mix the baking soda with cold water and then mix some with hot water to see what happens next!
