Planting swan plant seeds

Today we planted swan plant seeds in little peat pots!
Scientist and teacher Stan Swan brought seeds from his garden and helped us plant them in the pots.
Stan showed us how the seeds grow inside a swan shaped pod.
That is why they are called swan plants!
We sorted out the seeds from the fluffy layer that helps the seeds float with the wind.
It was so interesting watching the pots swell up when we watered them! Everyone has a number on a toothpick so they know which pot is theirs.
We will wait a week while we keep watering them and then look for little green shoots!

We had a mini science club day last Friday when the year 1&2 teachers chose a child from each class to plant butterfly attracting plants in our class gardens. Thank you to Una, Satchel, Lucy, Meg, Charlie, Ella, Hannah and George for being our butterfly garden gardeners!

Performing Arts

At present we are enjoying 5 weeks of performing arts with Mrs Hooke.
We are learning to move in time to the beat, to stop and freeze and to make shape with a partner.

Spirit of the Theatre

Year 1&2 were invited to a show called The Spirit of the Theatre in Lower Hutt. Several students from Muritai School were in the cast and it was great to  see them perform. Everyone loved it!

School Gen team

Today Evie, Millie and Mia from the School Gen team came to talk to  Room1 about solar power.
They showed us how solar panels work by capturing energy from the sun. The Room1 children helped connect up a buzzer, a light and a fan to a little solar panel.

The buzzer made everyone laugh with it's funny sound out in the sunlight!

Millie, Evie and Mia then talked about ways to save electricity in our classroom and at home and we had a quiz about what we had learned. Super answers Room1! I was so pleased you remembered so much information!

Taking Action!
Room 1 have decided that it will be the superstar of the day's responsibility to make sure we turn the classroom lights off at lunchtime when we are not there.
We will go over to the senior school and look for the solar panels on the classroom roof and find out more about how they work.
Thank you Mia, Evie and Millie for coming to talk to Room 1 about solar energy!

Halloween

On Friday lots of children visited my house for Halloween!
There were some amazing costumes and face paint!
Harry's dogs came dressed up as bats!
